The scream echoed across the zoo before anyone could understand what had happened. Visitors rushed toward the lion habitat, where a young woman stood frozen inside the enclosure, separated from safety by a locked maintenance gate she had accidentally entered while trying to help retrieve a child’s dropped backpack. Before staff could unlock the entrance, a massive male lion emerged from the shade.
Gasps spread through the crowd as the animal lifted its head, fixed its golden eyes on the stranger, and began moving toward her. At first, it was a slow walk. Then it became a powerful run. As for the woman, she admitted she had not followed any special training. Years earlier, she had attended a wildlife lecture where she remembered hearing that sudden movements could make dangerous encounters even worse. With no escape available, staying still had seemed like her only chance.
The lion’s unusually calm behavior remained impossible to predict. The keepers believed the animal had likely been curious rather than hunting, helped by the fact that it had recently been fed and was accustomed to seeing calm humans only from behind secure barriers.
